How to secure a date with the High Warlock of Brooklyn

Step 1: Casually ask him if he wants to grab a cup of coffee.

Step 2: Find a way to make Izzy stop laughing because you accidentally proposed instead of asking Magnus out for coffee.

Step 3: Try to not propose again after Magnus suggested going on a date first.

Step 4: Fail to follow step 3.

Step 5: Overhaul the Clave and their laws that discourage same sex relationships and relationships with downworlders in general, because Magnus said yes!

Step 6: Marry Magnus.

He reached over and ran his fingertips in a light, absentminded caress along Alec’s neck. Alec leaned into his touch. When Magnus’s hand dropped, Alec wanted to follow it.

“Don’t worry about her,�� Magnus added. “Many warlocks have tragic childhoods. We come into a world already made dark by demons. It’s hard not to give in to the anger.”

“You don’t,” said Alec.

Magnus’s voice was bleak. “I have.”

“Shinyun didn’t have to join a cult,” said Alec.

“I didn’t have to found a cult,” Magnus pointed out.

Alec said, “That’s different.”

“Sure. It’s much worse.” Magnus tossed a twig into the fire and watched as it withered and blackened, and then curled into ash. Alec watched him.

Magnus Bane was always brightly burning, whimsical and effervescent, ethereal and carefree. He was the High Warlock of Brooklyn, who wore blazing colors and shiny glitter around his eyes. He was the sort of person who threw birthday parties for his cat and loved whomever he wanted loudly and proudly.

Only there was dark waiting behind the brightness. Alec had to learn that side of Magnus too, or he would never really know him.

PSA: JUST A STUPID SAPPY POST ABOUT ONE OF MY FAVS MR ALEXANDER LIGHTWOOD-BANE, A NATIONAL TREASURE (sort of long so read at your own risk)

one of my favorite things about show Alec is that he truly does not give a fuck. if you hurt the people he cares about, he will call you out on it. just a short little rant about the difference between book and show Alec. book Alec does not have any autonomy or is allowed any thoughts that don’t include jace. “I wish I could fight like jace, I wish I could act as jace does, or JACE JACE JACE. CC STOP LET ALEC BE HIS OWN PERSON FOR FUCKS SAKE

this is because when CC (just my personal opinion.) started writing about Alec, she thought he didn’t deserve to be his own person. she believed everyone should be obsessed with jace because well, she is and that’s the way it should be, right? and indeed, she planned to kill him off in the first book.

I’ve been having some thoughts since finishing the show because I don’t know who created show Alec and made him who he is (probably Matt, let’s be real) but thank you so much. Alec is his own person with his own feelings and his own thoughts. show Alec is a tremendous fighter and is seen to take on jace extremely well. book Alec for some weird reason isn’t a skilled fighter. which I’ll never understand but whatever lmao

no one in the book is allowed to call out jace for anything and if they do, it’s apparent that they’re “jealous” of jace. if jace is the best shadowhunter alive, then why does his worthless ass need saving every single book? and why is that person always Alec?

Jace treats Alec as a lap dog as wonderful Simon beautifully pointed out in the show. this is also something CC would never have allowed. Alec will call out Jace, the new high warlock of Brooklyn (ugh Lorenzo), clary, aldertree, the inquisitor, his parents, anyone who steps in his way. I think it’s such a big difference with book and show Alec.

I so badly wished to love book Alec (and trust me, I truly did try) but I just can’t. he doesn’t have a mind of his own and if he does, his role is to serve jace or be the funny stereotypical gay. he’s biphobic, hates that his boyfriend has a past, can’t stand up for himself, like he’s not even his own person. he can’t even have his own pov for some of the most important parts of his story. this is a love post for show Alec because that’s the Alec we deserved to read about. one who speaks his own mind, loves and protects those he cares about, and will take no one’s shit.

he’s literally the only one who didn’t trust clary or Sebastian but everyone (except maybe Izzy) who acted as though Alec was the problem. seriously just a big thank you to mending Alec and making him one of the best reasons to watch the show 🫶🏼

I’m in love with Alec and I’m so happy with his growth 🥹 it’s truly the Alec and Magnus show and I’m so here for it 👏🏼

It’s a beautiful hand.

Even wreathed in the most dangerous and devastating of flames, it’s beautiful.

It’s also going to be the cause of Alec’s migraine only getting worse, the same way it has for the last month.

“Magnus, please don’t char the papers again this week.” Alec asks, voice a quiet plea and he doesn’t even realize he’s spoken.

In his exhaustion he doesn’t recognize his own mother’s outrage or Jia’s calculative gaze at the casual, almost intimate way he’s referred to the High Warlock of Brooklyn.

Alec also doesn’t see how irritated brown give way to curious, hungry gold or that the papers remain safe.

The fire not yet snuffed out but dancing on Magnus’ fingertips.

“For you, I’ll consider it. Alexander.”

It’s his name that does it.

Alec blinks open his eyes to realize this is not a fever-dream and also with the sudden and intense awareness that he really liked the sound of his full name on Magnus’ lips.

Alec considers what exactly would win him points with Magnus and realizes that honestly, probably anything his mother would hate.

It’s too easy to let his lips curl the way they always want to whenever he sees Magnus.

Golden eyes widen and then narrow but Alec just leans across the table and — with no wariness and only the careful consideration of approaching a predator — Alec lightly runs his fingers over the back of Magnus palm.

Hellfire flutters and sparks but doesn’t touch or burn him and Alec tilts his head, baring his runed neck as he lets his gaze flutter to their joint hands.

“Thank you.” Is all Alec says, but he says it sincerely with every ounce of the pure gratitude and relief he’d felt when Magnus had listened to his request.

It’s the only thing he needs to say.

“I think—“ Magnus says and his voice is hoarse, a new darkness present to his tone. “That perhaps a recess is due. I feel I’ll be much more amiable to our negotiations after. Perhaps; Alexander you can join me for a drink while we wait?”

The thick, almost swollen silence in the room is set to burst and Alec just smiles, content with where he is.

“I’d love to.”

Malec Promptlet: Alec learns magical theory

Or the one where you can't actually live with the High Warlock of Brooklyn and not learn at least a little bit of magic.

Alec adores sitting in his spot in Magnus’s apothecary and watching him make potions or transcribe texts while Magnus absently commentates on everything he does. Magnus has never before allowed anyone such unfettered access to this space before and is constantly surprised at how much interest Alec takes in his work and the intelligent questions he asks once he’s sure he’s not bothering Magnus by asking.

Catarina comes by one day and is shocked that Alec automatically follows her and Magnus into his apothecary and even more shocked when Alec not only clearly has his space there, but Magnus isn’t  fluttering about uncomfortably with someone intrudingin the magical heart of his lair - he’s moving around as though Alec belongs there.

Magnus begins teaching Alec basic potions when he realizes how much Alec loves helping him in the apothecary, usually fetching and carrying ingredients. (The first time Alec pops up his side with a vial of angel’s fern in hand, Magnus blinks at him in confusion wondering how in Lilith’s name Alec had known he needed it. Alec grins. The potion is a healing one and Magnus had just put in three drams of fire lizard blood, a toxicant he knows from last week’s batch of burn serum can only be neutralized with angel’s fern. Magnus is both a little bemused and vaguely proud.)

Jace and Izzy come over one day and need a basic healing potion. They say they’ll wait for Magnus, but Alec just walks into the apothecary (asking his siblings to wait at the door since Magnus isn’t there) and begins gathering ingredients and preparing the workspace. They’re very confused. Magnus comes home in the middle and wraps his arms around Alec from behind, burying his face in the back of Alec’s neck and muttering something sotto voce that makes the Shadowhunter blush. Jace and Izzy cackle in delight.

In the middle of the Institute cafeteria one day when Magnus is visiting, Catarina and Magnus get into a spirited debate on the use of mundane ingredients in healing potions. When Alec comes to joining them at their table, dropping a kiss on Magnus’s cheek as he sits, the listening Shadowhunters are nonplussed when their Head has very definite opinions on this topic.
